Maria Eugenia Dimas Montenegro passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2024, after bravely battling cancer. She was the family backbone, a driven life-long-learner, a resourceful problem-solver, a compassionate nurturer, a creative adventure planner and a persistent advocate for herself and loved ones. Her legacy will live on through her mother, husband, brother, sister, cousins, in-laws, two daughters, son, two nieces, three nephews, seven grandchildren and cherished friends.
Born in Pamplona, Colombia, Maria Eugenia grew up in many towns since her dad was in the military. She completed her Bachelor’s degree of Science Economics at Javeriana University and a Masters from Rider University in Human Resources and Public Administration.
After marrying Hector Dimas and having three children, they moved to Pennsylvania where she resided for over 40 years. She was a devout Catholic and an active parishioner at St. Francis Cabrini in Fairless Hills and St. John the Evangelist in Yardley. She worked as the Finance and Human Resource Director of the United Way of Bucks County for 15 years and as the CFO of Education Works for 13 years. At both non-for-profits, she obtained clean audits every year.
Following retirement, she worked at H&R Block as a Tax Associate, Adjunct Professor of Spanish at Mercer Community College, a Spanish Instructor at the Princeton Adult School, and a substitute teacher for Bucks County School Districts. This gave her more time for swimming, walks around the neighborhood, yoga, arts exhibits, sports events with the grandkids, hosting family gatherings, and visiting her family in the US, Colombia, and Europe.
Maria Eugenia participated in various civic and professional organizations. For over 30 years, she belonged to Las Mujeres Latino-Americanas de Princeton and El Circulo Hispano de Princeton as a member, Secretary, Vice President, and President of the Board of Directors. For 20 years, Maria Eugenia volunteered at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as a Docent and member of the Executive Committee. She and her husband supported educational and art organizations such as the Kimmel Center, the Franklin Institute, and the New Jersey Symphony.
She will always be remembered for being full of hope, immense strength, compassion, and love for life.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, January 23 at 10:15 at St. John the Evangelist in Yardley. Following the service, we will have a gathering at the Dimas residence. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Red Cross (www.redcross.org) or the Philadelphia Museum of Art (philamuseum.org).
María Eugenia Dimas Montenegro falleció el miércoles 17 de enero de 2024 luego de luchar valientemente contra el cáncer. Ella era la columna vertebral de la familia, una persona motivada por aprender, solucionadora ingeniosa, cuidadora, bondadosa, planificadora de aventuras divertidas y partidaria de sí misma y de sus seres queridos. Su legado vivirá a través de su madre, esposo, hermano, hermana, primos, cuñadas, dos hijas, hijo, dos sobrinas, tres sobrinos, siete nietos y queridos amigos.
Nacida en Pamplona, Colombia, Maria Eugenia se crio en varias partes del país acompañando a su padre que estaba en el ejército. Completó su Licenciatura en Ciencias Económicas en la Universidad Javeriana y una Maestría de la Universidad de Rider en Recursos Humanos y Administración Pública.
Después de casarse con Héctor Dimas y tener tres hijos, se mudaron a Pennsylvania, donde ella vivió durante más de 40 años. Era una católica devota y feligresa activa de San Francis de Cabrini en Fairless Hills y San Juan el Evangelista en Yardley. Trabajó como Directora de Finanzas y Recursos Humanos de United Way of Bucks County durante 15 años y Directora Financiera de Education Works por 13 años. En ambas organizaciones sin fines de lucro, obtuvo auditorías perfectas todos los años.
Después de jubilarse, trabajó en H&R Block como asociada de impuestos, profesora de español en Mercer Community College, maestra de español en el Princeton Adult School y sustituta escolar. Esto le permitió tener más tiempo para nadar, caminar por el vecindario, hacer yoga, visitar exhibiciones de arte, atender eventos deportivos con sus nietos, organizar reuniones familiares y disfrutar con su familia en Estados Unidos, Colombia y Europa.
María Eugenia participó en diversas organizaciones cívicas y profesionales. Por más de 30 años perteneció al grupo de Mujeres Latino-Americanas de Princeton y al Círculo Hispano de Princeton como socia, Secretaria, Vicepresidenta y Presidenta de la Junta Directiva. Durante 20 años, María Eugenia estuvo involucrada con el Museo de Arte de Filadelfia como docente voluntaria y miembro del Comité Ejecutivo. Ella y su esposo apoyaron organizaciones educativas y artísticas como el Kimmel Center, el Franklin Institute y la Sinfonia de New Jersey.
Siempre recordaremos que Maria Eugenia fue llena de esperanza, compasión, inmensa fuerza, alegría y amor por la vida.
El funeral se llevará a cabo el martes 23 de enero a las 10:15 en St. John the Evangelist en Yardley. Después del servicio, tendremos un encuentro en la residencia Dimas.
