All St John the Evangelist Parish children who do not attend private or diocesan Catholic schools are invited to participate in the Religious Education Program (PREP). If you are new to the area, we encourage you to register in the parish and become an active member of our faith community. With approximately 450 students, 55+ volunteer teachers and aides, and other helpers, there are many opportunities for parents and other parishioners to join our staff and grow in faith as you journey towards Jesus along with out parish children.
REGISTRATION The Religion curriculum builds on what was previously learned and experienced. Our program has attendance requirements if we are to accomplish our objective of leading our children into the light of faith. Classes are held from K – 8 in the parish school. A Toddler Program is held every Sunday (during school year) in the school during the 9:30 and 11:30 AM Sunday Masses.
In early April of each year, registration packets are sent home to families already enrolled in the program. Forms can also be downloaded from the PREP page of the parish website. Timely return of the registrations enables us to recruit and train sufficient volunteer teachers and order textbooks and supplies accurately. Class size is limited to 15-18 or less and registration for a particular time is done on a “first come, first served” basis. Presently there are two sessions of PREP weekly:
· Sunday, 10:00 AM – 11:15 AM, Grades K – 8 · Monday, 5:15 PM – 6:30 PM, Grades K – 8
ROLE OF PARENTS Parents’ role in passing on the gift of faith to their children is so decisive that scarcely anything can compensate form a failure in it. As parents, you can create a family atmosphere so filled with love and reverence for God and His people that your children will be living Christian values even before they are intellectually aware of them. Your home is their first school of religious education.
It is the consistent teaching of the Church that parents are the primary educators of their children. At your child’s Baptism you replied to the priest’s questions that you clearly understood the responsibility of “training your child in the practice of the faith.” Our program is designed to assist you and to supplement the religious experiences that you provide as a family. We rely on your cooperation and lived faith at home for the success of our efforts. The leaders of this parish pledge our support to you in your unique role as parents. We accept your children in all their uniqueness and consider it a privilege to share our love of God and Church with them.
