St. John Berchmans Altar Server Society

The Saint John Berchmans’ Altar Server Society is a group of youth at Saint John the Evangelist Parish who offer special service to the Lord in His sanctuary by assisting the priests and deacons in celebrating the Liturgy especially the Holy Mass.

Membership in the society is open to all youth in the parish beginning in fifth grade. Membership is open in the Spring of every year Successful participation in the altar server training program is required for entrance. Members are inaugurated every Fall.

Servers may continue their service after completing eighth grade as “senior” members of the Saint John Berchmans Altar Server Society.

The permission of parents or guardians is required for participation.

Patron Saint of Altar Servers

Saint ]ohn Berchmans was born on March 13,1599 in Driest, Beigium.

He was the son of a shoemaker and one of five children. He had a great devotion to his position as an altar server. He also did great charity in caring for his mother who was very ill. He entered the novitiate for the Jesuits in 1616 after reading the life of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. He died before ordination on August 12, 1627. Saint ]ohn Berchmans is known for his exemplary service at the altar, his kindness, courtesy and faithfulness. He is the patron saint of altar servers around the world.
